What Is Emergency Dentistry?
Emergency dentistry addresses urgent oral health issues that require immediate professional attention to relieve pain, prevent further damage, and protect your overall health. By immediately addressing the root cause, emergency dentistry relieves acute symptoms and stabilizes oral health, delivering a crucial bridge to further necessary treatment.
Common scenarios requiring emergency intervention include persistent, severe tooth pain; uncontrolled bleeding; and infections or abscesses that threaten general health. Additionally, traumatic injuries to the teeth, gums, or jaw necessitate rapid professional attention.
At Scottsdale Dental Aesthetics, we prioritize emergency cases and do everything possible to see you the same day. Our experienced team is equipped to handle a wide range of urgent dental situations with skill and compassion.
When to Call
Common Dental Emergencies
Not sure if your situation is an emergency? Here are the most common scenarios that require immediate dental care.
Severe Tooth Pain
Persistent, throbbing, or sharp tooth pain that does not subside with over-the-counter medication may indicate an infection, abscess, or deep decay requiring urgent treatment.
Knocked-Out Tooth
A completely avulsed tooth is a time-sensitive emergency. If treated within an hour, the tooth may be successfully reimplanted. Keep the tooth moist and get to our office immediately.
Broken or Cracked Teeth
Significant fractures can expose the sensitive inner layers of the tooth, leading to pain and increasing the risk of infection. Prompt repair preserves the tooth and prevents further damage.
Lost Filling or Crown
When a filling or crown falls out, the exposed tooth becomes vulnerable to damage and sensitivity. A temporary fix can protect the tooth until a permanent restoration is placed.
Dental Abscess
An abscess is a serious infection that appears as a painful, pus-filled swelling on the gums. Left untreated, the infection can spread to other areas of the body and become life-threatening.
Bleeding or Trauma
Uncontrolled bleeding after an injury, lacerations to the gums or soft tissue, or trauma from a sports injury or accident all require immediate evaluation to stop bleeding and assess damage.
Immediate Steps
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Call Us Immediately
Contact Scottsdale Dental Aesthetics at (480) 991-3244 as soon as possible. Explain your symptoms clearly so we can prioritize your case and prepare for your arrival.
Manage Pain & Swelling
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling, and take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.
Preserve Knocked-Out Teeth
If a tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown, rinse gently, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that is not possible, store it in milk or saliva until you reach our office.
Avoid Certain Actions
Do not apply aspirin directly to the gums, do not use sharp objects to remove debris, and avoid eating or drinking on the affected side until you are evaluated.
